Space-saving connectors for tight spaces in electric buses

Electric buses from Czech manufacturer SOR place highest requirements on the performance and size of electrical connectors. Working closely with Stäubli enabled them to find the right solution to their problem.

Established in 1991, SOR has a long tradition in the development and manufacture of environmentally friendly buses. With a responsible approach to development and production, they can offer a very efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.

Vehicle modularity limits space for technology

Being specialized in manufacturing buses, all SORs vehicles are designed for passenger transit in urban environments with an emphasis on low-cost operation. The ability to arrange seats and entrance doors in various layouts inside the vehicle for all environments is a main feature of the new SORs all-low-floor electric bus. This unique design solution of technical elements makes for an economical operation of this model but may also limit space under passenger surfaces. In order to guarantee easy assembly and user-friendly maintenance, the SOR engineers decided to make use of pluggable connections for their busses. The challenge: Space for pluggable connectors and their assembly in the buses is very limited.

Stäubli’s solution

In cooperation with Stäubli experts, it was evaluated that the PerforMore multi-pole connector meets the high requirements of the new SOR bus. It’s two stage locking mechanism enables quick and user-friendly operation as well as high occupational safety. The easy handling saves time during assembly and maintenance, where safe and reliable operation is essential in high voltage applications. By using the 90° angled version, the Stäubli connector eases the installation in limited packing environments in various positions within the vehicle.
