The rise of personalized medicine and increasingly complex, unpredictable forecasts have led to significant disruptions in the supply of medicines. These challenges are primarily due to the inflexibility of current manufacturing lines used in the pharmaceutical industry. This presentation explores potential solutions to these issues, focusing on how the challenges presented by small and micro-batch production can be overcome.

With the arrival of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) as well as a rise in personalized healthcare, there is an increasing demand for visual inspection solutions for products with low to very low volume and high product variation. The production of high-mix/low-volume medicines pose challenges for fully automated visual inspection (AVI) systems that are geared towards high throughput. Is there way to combine the output, process safety and reproducibility of an AVI system with the flexibility and short lead time of a manual visual inspection (MVI)? This presentation gives an insight into the various challenges that pharmaceutical and equipment manufacturers and the interest group for visual inspection at large face and how they can be addressed.
Alex Schäfer
Technical Product Manager at Wilco AG

Maximum flexibility in the fields of Cell and Gene Therapy (CGT) and laboratory environments is key to the success. But how can this be effectively achieved? How can various containers, consumables and processes be integrated into one solution? The answer lies in a user-friendly HMI, smart engineering and advanced, flexible robotics. Using an example of inoculum production, the presentation will demonstrate how different containers, pipettes, and lab devices can be efficiently combined into a compact and flexible system.

Robotics are finding more and more application in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, for example in small batch production. The necessary flexibility inherent to production of small batches requires appropriate solutions and is further potentiated by the demands that need to be met for filling of sterile products.
As worldwide leading manufacturer of isolator systems for aseptic drug manufacturing, SKAN will discuss about the requirements for robots in aseptic environments. The presentation is centered around a case study highlighting the collaboration between Stäubli and SKAN to drive the development of new features for the Stericlean package to ensure that Stericlean+ robots are suitable for integration into pharmaceutical isolators and operation under aseptic manufacturing conditions. Key presented developments include appropriate material selection, design of robot surfaces for efficient cleaning and decontamination, as well as characterization of particle generation from moving parts.

Single-use systems have become established in biotechnology and are also increasingly being used in the sterile production of pharmaceuticals. A key reason for this is that the costs for cleaning are significantly reduced compared to a stainless-steel system. In addition, cleaning validation is not required. Furthermore, the time to market can be shortened by eliminating construction work and faster scale-up. We will show you the various aspects of using single-use systems. Our experts from the field are available to answer your questions - come to the presentation with your questions.

Stäubli develops fluid-line coupling solutions in response to the challenges facing the fine chemicals sectors, pharmaceutical laboratories, biotechnology, and the cosmetics industry. Sterilizable quick-release couplings without retention areas maintain product integrity and are made using materials suitable for corrosive atmospheres.
Stäubli connectors also ensure the safety of installations and operators. Mechanically interlocking, ergonomic couplings offer solutions for a wide range of applications, such as inserting of tanks and the provision of breathing air.
